After the bad winter in the Alps last year we decided in summer 2011 to not only shoot in Europe for our next movie. We wanted to take the chance and visit our „Good Bye Germany“ friends Dani Gassner, Flo Göller and Chris Graf in their new hometown of Whistler, B.C.
So Basti Färber, Dominik Hartmann, Marinus Höflinger, Georg Stückler, Tobias Huber, Katha Schröer, Flo Breitenberger and I started planing our 5 week trip to the unknown. As we‘re all students we figured the best date would be during the 2012 winter semester break. After a really good european early season and unusual amounts of snow, which also delayed our flight, we finally arrived in springlike +17 °C Vancouver after uncountable hours of traveling.

But still there was nothing to question the decision to travel to Canada this winter. Because during our five weeks stay we still got what you image to find in the Canadian winter: untouched deep powder.
In Whistler we finally got to meet our friends Flo, Dani and Chris. And as we figured out right away all three of them already are real Canadians with the typical lifestyle and attitude. As you can see by their stunning fleet of trucks, jeeps and sleds in front of their house, a shared flat of nine people. Although our trip started promising, the spring like temperatures and the poor snow conditions were not fun at all. But due to the knowledge of Flo and Chris and aided by touring skins we had the chance to ski terrain which the usual Whistler visitor won‘t be able to find. Thanks again boys!

After spending 10 days in Whistler we went to Revelstoke, where it finally started snowing. And we were lucky enough that it pretty much kept on snowing for the next three weeks.
But it was really interesting to see, that absolutely ever skier in the resort is skiing powder and there‘s hardly anybody skiing on the slopes and you can‘t find untracked snow at all. So we had to rethink and figure out an alternative to get shots for our movie. The Rogers Pass in the Glacier National Park is less than a one hour drive from Revelstoke and offers pretty much the best terrain you can imagine. But there are no lifts and no sleds allowed so you have to put on the skins and literally earn you turns. For the zones we skied we first had to skin up at least 600 meter of altitude difference.

But for us it was a real fair trade because in exchange of the climb we got a phenomenal playground embedded by real Canadian champagne powder. More than just happy we fell asleep between 8pm and 9pm for the next ten days, to get up early in the morning to start into the next perfect but exhausting powder day.

Our next stop was Rossland, a touristy little town with typical north american flair, where we lived in a hostel without warm water and heat insolation, but with a really nice atmosphere, so we started to enjoy the time there real fast. Just out of town and up the hill the Red Mountain Resort treated us with good conditions and nice and easy accessible terrain. We found some good kicker spots so we spent our time building kickers for a day and then jumping on the other back and forth.

All in all a perfect conclusion to a brilliant trip. But there was still one factor missing, a little one, but still an important one: Party. But thank god there is the colorful and flashy Vancouver which provided us with all what it takes to make a good trip to a perfect trip.

In diesem Sinne, “machts as guad!”
Was wollen wir damit sagen?
